Libertarian Mom

by Birdie on September 3, 2010

Time for a little confession. I am a registered Republican and I voted for Obama but wanted Barr to win. How is that for irony? I realized that Barr didn’t have a chance in hell though and just couldn’t stand the thought of Sarah Palin leading the nation. Don’t worry, I’m not going to trash Palin. Really? She’s way to obvious and easy to make her my target (unless she runs for president then it’s ON). I’m not even going to blast the Tea Party (for now) because I’m tired of them getting so much freaking attention when they aren’t even a nationally cohesive party with a real platform. (well maybe an itsybitsybitty blast). I’m going to talk about the Libertarian party. I think it is what most of the rational members of the Tea Party movement really want and what the Republicans should have been touting all along. So why do I like the Libertarian part?

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away I was a teacher. The biggest thing I tried to teach was justice and fairness. I tried to always be fair with my students and never go back on my word. This meant following through on punishments and rewards and treating them with the respect they deserved as human beings instead of like little ants in an ant farm. I feel the same way about government. I think it should be fair. I think our Constitution is a pretty fantabulous document and I think our current government (by current I don’t mean Obama I mean all of it. Dude, he’s one guy and he didn’t walk into office and then make it fall apart) isn’t all that fair AND I don’t think it is really working in the spirit of the Constitution. Oh and if you are wondering, I never taught my religious or political beliefs in the class room because I think that is unethical. I taught the FACTS and let the kids do what they wanted with them. Right, back to the Libertarian party.

I think this sums it up well: I want for everyone liberty and I want for everyone to be responsible and tolerant. Just because you don’t like a particular moral choice does not make it illegal. Just because it sucks if someone isn’t doing well doesn’t make it the government’s responsibility. Our government simply cannot take care of everyone while allowing the people to remain free. Long term it isn’t going to be possible. So what do I want? Well the political list is long so I’ll just put in the Libertarian views on some of the hot button topics.

  • Abortion – It is a personal decision and none of the government’s business. I am not saying abortion is morally right (or wrong) because that has nothing to do with the legality of the issue.
  • Personal Relationships – It is none of the government’s business unless it is hurting someone else.
  • Marriage – I could do this debate alllll day. Marriage is a religious ceremony and a legally binding contract. In regards to marriage it is none of the government’s business what a Church (Catholic, Baptist, Greek Orthodox or what have you) decides to do. If they don’t want to marry people because they are of the same sex, have funny hair, or don’t dress the right way it is none of the government’s business. Religious ceremony, totally up to individual churches. However, as a legally binding contract (which it is, hence divorce lawyers and all the government fees associated with getting married and all of the laws around marriage) it is the government’s business. And the United States government isn’t supposed to discriminate. Therefore, if it isn’t hurting anyone (no forced marriages, no 10 year old marriages etc) they should have the same rule for everyone.
  • Education – I’m homeschooling yet a ton of my tax money goes to funding public schools my children won’t attend. Free market and diversity are a beautiful thing. Letting parents control the funds used for their child’s education is even more beautiful.
  • Retirement – Personal responsibility. Let people secure their own retirement. I promise you I can do a better job than the government can with my retirement money.

I know, I know. I’m getting long winded and blog posts are supposed to be short so I’m going to stop. If I have interested you in the Libertarian party you can visit the main Libertarian website or take a quiz to see if you are actually a closet Libertarian.

Whether you are a Libertarian fan or not, tell me what you think about them! I’d love to hear the views of other moms.

Birdie,
I’m right with you on all your bullet points but I am FLABBERGASTED that you pulled the lever for Obama in 2008. Seriously, McCain and Palin were no treat, but REALLY? How has Obama ever shown the slightest respect for the constitution?
(By the way, I voted for Paris Hilton in ’08 ;o)

I was REALLY following politics at the time and I was actually going to vote for Huckabee but then McCain got the ticket so I was going to vote for him (b/c I generally think it’s better to have a bad republican than a mediocre democrat) and then I listened to Palin and I wanted to have a sex change and switch party affiliations because she was such an embarrassment to both. I’m harsh. I know this. BUT I really couldn’t stand the thought of her being one heartbeat away from making all of the decisions for this country. And all in all I think Obama IS a good guy and intelligent. Do I agree with him on everything? No, and I don’t see me voting for him again. But yeah. I’d still vote for him over Palin and anyone else :)
